Camping in Allegany State Park

Wildlife Wednesday: Allegany State Park is a great place for the Common Loon to stop and rest while migrating north into Canada. They have solid bones that help them dive deeper and their feet are in the back of their body to dive quickly underwater and to catch fish. Because of the extra weight and location of their feet they need a runway to take flight. This past winter, a hunter with the help of his dog, stumbled upon a rare find in Allegany State Park. What they discovered was an active bear den tucked back in the dense thickets of dogwoods and rose. This information was promptly reported to DEC and Allegany State Park staff. With a Cornell University study currently underway that focuses on black bears in the Southern Tier, this was an incredible opportunity to gather biological data for the study.
