Javelina have a unique evolutionary history, and despite resembling pigs, they are not true pigs but are part of a separate family of hoofed mammals called peccaries. Javelina are characterized by their dark-gray to black coat, a white collar of fur around their shoulders, and sharp tusks. They are social animals that live in groups, called "bands," have fairly poor eyesight but use their strong sense of smell to forage for food, primarily consisting of fruits, seeds, and plants.
