Wine cap mushroom or Stropharia rugosoannulata is saprophytic, obtaining nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter such as straw or wood chips (lignin and cellulose).This video shows one of the beds we built two years ago, one with wood chips and another with straw. We laid about an inch of each substrate directly on the ground, followed by crumbled-up wine cap sawdust and grain spawn.
