Riding around Island Park today, we found the same weak, faceted snow at the surface we’re seeing across the rest of the forecast area. While there are lots of tracks that have beaten down the surfaces in the meadows and creek bottoms, there is still lots of weak snow in the starting zones of the avalanche paths. Once it starts to snow again, we expect to quickly start seeing avalanches on this weak layer. Warm temperatures this week won’t solve this weak snow problem. @skidoo @avalanche.allianc

Even with very limited visibility while riding in Island Park today we saw a rider triggered avalanche from a few days ago and then later a small slide triggered today (2/8/24). The snowpack is unstable and human triggered avalanches are likely. As more snow piles up these slides are started to break deeper but also give less feedback before avalanching. This is a tricky combination. Be very heads up the next couple days. Plan to avoid all steep slopes. | Friends of the Gallatin National Forest
