The Battle of Okinawa began on this day 80 years ago. Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist and pacifist who asked for non-combatant status when he was drafted in 1942, served unarmed. Still, he played a big part in that battle. The film "Hacksaw Ridge" depicts the events. During the battle, Doss treated wounded GIs and lowered them to safety from atop a steep escarpment using ropes. It happened over the course of several hours and under enemy fire.
