From 2022 to 2023 the dial increased another 1.6% relative to 1990 levels, a rate that has been sustained for many years. The AGGI in 2023 was 1.51, which means that we’ve turned up the warming influence from greenhouse gases by 51% since 1990.

Sea level can rise by two different mechanisms with respect to climate change. First, as the oceans warm due to an increasing global temperature, seawater expands—taking up more space in the ocean basin and causing a rise in water level.

Tracking climate change and natural variability over time. The heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases was 49 percent higher in 2022 than it was in 1990. Since 1979, the extent of ice covering the Arctic Ocean at the end of summer has shrunk by more than 40 percent.

Global ocean temperatures in 2023 were also noteworthly with nine-consecutive months (April–December) of record warm temperatures. The September ocean temperature anomaly value (+1.04°C/+1.87°F) was warmest of any month on record.
