Early settler Malie M. Jackson developed 10 miles (16 km) of the Buckeye Canal from 1884 to 1886, which he named after his home state of Ohio's moniker, "The Buckeye State". The town was founded in 1888 and originally named "Sidney", after Jackson's hometown in Ohio.

The Story of Buckeye. Buckeye was co-founded by the Clantons, a family who made a tradition of settling places. Thomas Newt Clanton left for Arizona in 1877, leading a party of six men, three women and ten children from Creston, Iowa. The Clanton’s hailed from Madison County, Iowa, which was settled by Thomas' father, Isaac, who is buried there.

Property owners in the area petitioned to have the name of the town “changed forever to Buckeye.” The name of the canal was given by its builder M.M. Jackson after the nickname of his home state of Ohio. Previously known as Sidney the town was established in 1888 but was not incorporated until 1931. The town of Buckeye became a city in 2014.
