Jordan and Syria have agreed to form a joint security committee to secure their border, combat arms and drug smuggling and work to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State militants, the Jordanian foreign minister said on Tuesday.

The two diplomats agreed to cooperate on drug and weapons smuggling during the new Syrian foreign minister's first visit to Amman.

Syria and Jordan will set up a joint committee to secure their mutual border following talks between the countries' top diplomats on Tuesday.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Jordan and Syria agreed to form a joint security committee to secure their border and combat the smuggling of arms and drugs as well as cooperating to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Tuesday.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Tuesday that the kingdom was ready to work with the new Syrian authorities to tackle drug and weapons smuggling across their shared border.

The first international commercial flight since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad landed Tuesday at the Damascus airport, arriving from Qatar. Jordanian state-run Petra news agency reported that a Royal Jordanian Airlines plane departed for Damascus on a test flight.
