West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that he is sending hundreds of National Guard troops from his state to Washington, D.C., to assist with President Donald Trump’s crackdown on violent crime in the capital.

“I have never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive,” Police Chief Pamela Smith said.

D.C.'s status as a congressionally established federal district gives Trump a window to assert more control over the the district than other cities.

The local government of Washington is suing the administration of US President Donald Trump over what it says is an illegal takeover of the capital's police.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser didn't offer much resistance at first, allowing city workers to clear homeless encampments and work closely with federal immigration agents.
