Amazon is facing its second workers’ union vote in as many months as laborers at a warehouse in suburban Raleigh, North Carolina, decide this week whether they wish to collectively bargain with the retail giant.

Voting began today in a union election at Amazon’s RDU1 warehouse in Garner that could make the sprawling facility the second unionized Amazon workplace in the United States.

For organizers at an Amazon warehouse in Garner, N.C., it’s vote-garnering time. Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE) is currently holding a vote to unionize; the election,

“Three days later, Amazon mobilized an army,” said Marcela Duron, a stower. (Duron requested a pseudonym for fear of retaliation.) “Holding meetings, handing out pamphlets, all against CAUSE.”

The National Labor Relations Board is overseeing the vote, with votes due to be counted Saturday. A win by CAUSE would be just the second Amazon facility to see a union win a representation vote. The Seattle-based company recently said it would close a warehouse in Canada after workers there voted to unionize in May 2024.

North Carolina is a state that is generally hostile to unions. Amazon is a company that is, historically, extremely hostile to unions. Now an upstart union is attempting to represent more than 4,000 Amazon workers at one of the online retailer’s facilities there.
