A powerful winter storm system moving across the Great Lakes and Northeast is bringing snow and ice, frigid temperatures and possible whiteout conditions.

A large, moisture‑loaded storm will sweep into the Northeast late this week. The sprawling system will bring cold rain to much of the Northeast, but there will be a swath of sleet and freezing rain inland,

The snowfall, brought by Storm Goretti, will mean trains and planes could be delayed or cancelled, rural communities may be cut off, and power cuts or disruption to mobile signals are likely, forecasters said. The warning stretches from Sheffield in the North, down to Leicester, across much of the West Midlands and into Wales.

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings, one for wind in the south west of England between 3pm and midnight on Thursday, and another for snow in the East Midlands, the West Midlands, London, the East, the South East, Yorkshire, the North West, the South West and large parts of Wales.
