Until they took the lead midway through the first half, Senegal did not create many chances, and even the goal was largely down to Diarra’s howler. Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly marshalled an unconvincing defence, was fortunate not to concede a penalty, and struggled to contain lively striker Lassine Sinayoko.
Senegal were far from perfect on the night, but did just enough to keep their heads above water. They were helped to that end by Yves Bissouma, who was shown a pair of yellow cards in the first half to leave his team-mates shorthanded.
