An Oregon judge has ordered the city at the heart of a major U.S. Supreme Court homelessness ruling to pause enforcement of its camping rules for 14 days.

The Josephine County judge issued the temporary restraining order after a legal challenge from Disability Rights Oregon and the Oregon Law Center.

Oregon’s cities will push the state Legislature to give them more money for roads, water and sewers, more power to remove homeless camps and more flexibility to spend hotel tax revenue on basic services.

Disability Rights Oregon sued Grants Pass on Thursday, accusing it of violating a state law requiring cities’ camping regulations to be “objectively reasonable.”

Just months after receiving national attention as the plaintiff of a Supreme Court case over its homeless policies, the small southern Oregon city of Grants Pass is now accused of forcing hundreds of homeless people into one small campsite.

The City Council ordered one of the only two sites for legal camping closed in the middle of January, in the middle of bitterly cold weather, without any regard for where people would live,” the suit says.

Last week, a new Grants Pass city council closed the larger of two city-owned properties that had been designated as sanctioned campsites for homeless people.
