Bitterly cold temperatures from Amarillo to Dallas will set the stage for what promises to be a significant winter storm in North Texas.

HOUSTON - The next Texas winter storm is almost here, and it's going to be ugly. Houston will avoid the worst of it. Wednesday will be cloudy, breezy and cold, so bundle up. Highs will be in the mid-40s. Thursday gets interesting. Ice and snow begin for north-central and North Texas.

Brutal cold will open the door for a winter storm to take a somewhat unusual track through the South and create treacherous conditions.

The greatest possibility of a wintry mix of precipitation in Southeast Texas this week will be in and near the Brazos Valley and Piney Woods regions.

The timeframe would be Thursday morning into Friday with snow and ice being the main concern for areas north of Houston.

Long-range weather models are showing a chance of snow and ice for parts of Texas next week, but plenty of uncertainty remains for San Antonio.
