Chantal weakened into a post-tropical cyclone after forming off the coast of Florida, bringing significant flooding to several Eastern U.S. states, according to the National Hurricane Center. Chantal became a tropical depression on Friday, bringing heavy rain to Central Florida.
Tropical Storm Chantal moved inland Sunday morning bringing rain and flood threats after striking the Carolina coast with 50 mph winds. As of the National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m.
Tropical Storm Chantal is expected to produce heavy rainfall across portions of the coastal plain of the Carolinas through Monday. Storm total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts up to 6 inches, is expected. This rainfall will result in an elevated risk for flash flooding.
There's a chance that Tropical Storm Chantal will form near Florida during Fourth of July weekend, which may dampen holiday festivities in the Sunshine State. The biggest threat from the developing system will be rain, AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva told Newsweek, although he doesn't expect Chantal to become a hurricane.
Tropical Storm Chantal formed on Saturday as it slowly moved in the Atlantic toward the Carolinas, according to the National Weather Service.
