Influenza A, COVID-19 and norovirus (stomach flu) are on the rise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But there's a fourth "bug" the public should be aware of: respiratory syncytial virus. RSV causes cold-like symptoms and affects the breathing passages and lungs.

Hospital bosses have urged patients, staff and visitors to wear surgical face masks to combat a surge in flu cases. A spokesperson for Southmead Hospital in north Bristol said they have seen a "sharp rise" in flu and respiratory illness – particularly since the start of the year.

Leighton Hospital has "strongly urged" patients and visitors to wear face masks in clinical areas amid a rise in cases of seasonal viruses - including flu, norovirus, RSV and Covid. The reintroduction of face masks in these areas comes into force today (January 9).

The Biden administration's spending on stimulus to keep the economy going during the COVID pandemic may have contributed a little bit to inflation, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in an interview on CNBC on Wednesday.

The Treasury secretary said supply chain issues, shortages drove up prices during the pandemic, but that stimulus spending could have played a role as well.
