Manchester Art Gallery is a large municipal gallery that exhibits a wide range of 18th and 20th century art. They also have a childrens active zone and admission is free for most exhibitions.

I do like visiting when in Manchester, certainly a great free attraction. Some amazing artwork in the various halls. Coming from Wigan I was delighted to see a painting called lunch at a Wigan mill Full review by ian_dempster

A nice collection of mainly Victorian paintings and a relaxing refreshment area. Well worth a visit despite the building works taking place. Full review by Angela H
